Appearance

Mel has blue eyes and strawberry-blonde hair. She doesn’t wear makeup despite owning a lot of it,[1] and typically ties her hair up in a bun.

Her school uniform is always neat and in accordance to the dress code. Outside of school, she often wears a bright cardigan paired with comfortable jeans.

Personality

Mel is incredibly studious, aspiring to go to Cambridge University to study Law. She obsesses over this until Sid goes missing, at which point her focus shifts to looking for him.

She is friendly but quiet, remarking that if she were alone in a room with someone, she would rather sit in silence over talking about something neither of them actually care about.[2]

Relationships

Sid was Mel’s twin brother. Despite being the same age, Mel always felt like the older sibling – due to being moved up a school year. They were shown to be very close through various flashbacks. Mel blames herself for his disappearance, worrying that he didn’t feel comfortable enough to open up to her.

Harry and Mel’s parents were old friends, so they have known each other since they were little. They are friends at school and share many of the same classes. Harry moves into Mel’s home after it is implied his Mum commits suicide.[3] By the end of the story, they are engaged.

Penny and Mel are childhood friends who are complete opposites. Their friendship officially ends when Mel snaps at Penny over the phone in Chapter 7 and hangs up. This is the last time they ever talk, which Mel harbours a lot of guilt over.

Mel is close with her mother and regularly confides in her. Despite learning that she is not Chloe’s biological child in Chapter 12, Mel remains close to her.
